Press Release: Dismissal of four executive members of Aweil Community Association - USA

April 2nd, 2007

Dear Aweil citizens,

As most of you know, our community had had serious problems since elections last year due to the activities of certain members our community. Among the members who have been working hard to impede the progress of Aweil community in USA are:

Tito Achaak (Georgia) - Secretary for Culture & Traditional

Gaeang Lual Bol (Tennessee) - Secretary for International relationship

Aken Kuol Aken (Kansas) - Secretary for Education

Deng Diing (New York) - Deputy General Secretary

It took us nearly half a year trying to resolve the problem without going public with it but to no avail. The main problem was caused by Tito Achaak, the representative of Georgia State. As you all know, Mr. Achaak was the former Secretary of Finance in the administration of Mr. Riakriak Garang and had control of our community’s finances.  But for reasons only best known to him, he refused to turn the money over to the new Secretary of Finance (Polino Yel) in spite of repeated attempts on our part to persuade him. This problem began during the 7th annual election last November when Mr. Achaak stated that “we are going to work ourselves with Malual people.”  This has created controversy among Aweil Community members. We have written letters to the president of Georgia State, Mr. Akui asking him to persuade Mr. Achaak to handover finances to the new finance secretary.  However, we neither received any response from him nor did he attempt to resolve the situation.

Furthermore, other members (mentioned above) have impeded the activities of Aweil community in the US office by refusing to work with us. Their goal has been to disrupt the unity of our community and cause us to fail in our mission to serve our people. In their determination to crumble the Aweil community in USA, they went ahead and formed their own group that is separate from the mother Aweil Community. They first named their breakaway group as “Malual Buoth Anyaar Communty,” they went as far as creating a website for their so called “Malual Buoth Anyaar Communty.” But after realizing that not a single Aweil citizen was willing to follow them in their divisive drive, they changed their name into Aweil community association in USA (ACA-USA) in defiant of the fact that Aweil Community Association in USA is a registered not-for-profit organization which brings Aweil people living in the US together. Legally, these people are wrong in every sense of the word, they seem to have forgotten that they live in the United States where infringement on copyright law is a major crime. As we wrote this message, this group is calling meetings in the name of Aweil Community Association in USA without prior knowledge of president and other executive members. These meetings are illegal since they are not sanction by the office of the Aweil Community Association in USA. The breakaway group is strongly being urged to stop going ahead with these meetings immediately because what they are doing is not only illegal but also undermines the unity of Aweil people. We, the elected body of the Aweil Community in USA will not tolerate disintegration of Aweil community to happen on our watch. The office of Aweil Community is currently preparing for the pre-Annual conference meeting to be held in a month or two. This will be made public as soon as all they arrangements have been completed.

In light of all the destructive activities the breakaway group have been doing which did nothing but impede the progress of our great community, the office of Aweil Community in USA wishes to inform the general public that, effective from today April, 2nd 2007, the four representatives namely: Tito Achaak, Garang Lual Bol, Aken Kuol Aken and Dominic Deng Diing are relieved of their official duties. Any further attempt by these four members to write press letter, call meetings or do anything on behalf of Aweil community in USA without prior knowledge of the office will be considered illegal and will result to persecution in the court of law. Their respective States of Georgia, Tennessee, Kansas and New York are being asked to appoint new representatives to take up the positions vacated by the four members (mentioned above) who have been dismissed.

Finally, we, members of ACA-USA would like to reiterate our commitment to preserve the unity of Aweil community in USA and to serve it as faithfully as we promised in Omaha, Nebraska last year. But we can not accomplish the aspirations of Aweil people without the cooperation of Aweil citizens in the States. Aweil Community Association is the strongest community based organization in the United States and therefore, Aweil citizens are being urged to embrace the unity that kept our community strong all these years as well as contributing to the programmes of our community which are aimed at alleviating the suffering of our people back home. Thank you.
