Federation of Aweil Communities in Canada (F.A.C.C) First Release 29/05/05:

 

The office of the F.A.C.C would like to extend our appreciation to all the Aweil people who traveled vast distances in order to attend the Federation of Aweil Communities in Canada’s 2nd Annual Conference held in Winnipeg-Manitoba. We wish to recognize the effort, hospitality, and generosity demonstrated by the Aweil community of Manitoba toward the national and international delegates. Our love for our homeland was evidenced by the fact that some delegates had to travel for twenty-eight hours in order to attend this important Conference.  These sacrifices were made in order to fulfill our original purpose: to ensure a healthy future for Mading Aweil. We, the members of the F.A.C.C, also need to give particular recognition to Mr. Riakriak Akok, chairman of the Aweil community in the United States for his attendance at the F.A.C.C. conference and for presenting the official position of the Aweil community in the United States to our community in Canada.  We must thank the former office of F.A.C.C for all the work its members have accomplished. The former office of F.A.C.C created the foundation upon which this new office will stand. We wish to congratulate everyone who served in the old office: the Aweil people and the new F.A.C.C. office appreciate your crucial services and work.

            In its second annual conference held on the 21st of May 2005, in Winnipeg-Manitoba, the old F.A.C.C office was officially dissolved and a new office was formed. The new F.AC.C office comprises the following people:

 

1.      Ashuein Achuil; Chairman (reelected)

2.      Garang Kuot; Secretary General

3.      Majok Wek; Secretary of finance

4.      Garang Manyok; Executive member

5.      James Gop; executive member

 

In the newly drafted constitution of the F.A.C.C, unanimously endorsed by all the conference attendees, a branch named: Advisory Committee (A.C) is created. The objective of this committee is to simplify the tasks of the federation. The Advisory Committee comprises the following people:

 

1.      Riny Riny Lual

2.      Yai Lual Nuar

3.      Mathias Jongkor Jongkor

4.      Dut Aleu Geng

5.      Sultan Awach Awach

 

As noted above, the chairman of the Aweil community in the United States, Mr. Riakriak Akok, attended the F.A.C.C.’s 2nd Annual Conference with the aim of establishing a relationship between the F.A.C.C. and the Aweil community in the US. It was decided that the Aweil community in Canada (F.A.C.C.) and the Aweil community in the US would work together- seen as a necessary step toward bringing together the Aweil people in the diaspora.

The delegates discussed the issue of famine in Aweil, viewing it as an immediate challenge that requires a collective response from Aweil citizens abroad. Mr. Riakriak Akok informed the F.A.C.C. office of the US Aweil community’s ongoing initiative to build two high schools in the Aweil mainland, one in Aweil West and another in Aweil East. Knowing well the poor state of education at home, the F.A.C.C. pledged to participate in this noble project.  The F.A.C.C office is asking Aweil citizens, wherever they reside in Canada, to become involved in the realization of this project.

In order to make the aspirations and dreams of the federation achievable, the F.A.C.C office has created two committees consisting of five members: one for youth and another for fundraising events. The names of the respective committee members will be made available as soon as these members are nominated. The Youth Committee will coordinate the activities of Aweil youth across Canada while the Fundraising Committee, in collaboration with the secretary of finance, will organize and coordinate fundraising activities across Canada. The plan to create women’s committee is underway.

The Federation’s Constitution was heavily debated and endorsed by the delegates who attended the conference.  It was agreed upon that a few changes would be made to the constitution.  A committee of five members will be formed to amend the areas identified by the conference attendees. The F.A.C.C’s approved constitution will be published on the F.A.C.C. website (currently under construction), so that everyone may have access to it.

F.A.C.C. is calling on all Aweil citizens in Canada and beyond to put aside their differences in opinion and go ahead with the reconstruction and peace-building process of our homeland. The time for rebuilding our war-torn motherland is now. Therefore, citizens are asked to live up to their obligations, as Aweil peoples, at these challenging times.

The office of F.A.C.C. also wishes to inform all Aweil citizens that F.A.C.C. is now an officially registered organization in Canada, created in order to coordinate the activities of Aweil citizens across Canada and beyond. Aweil citizens in Canada should now unite behind F.A.C.C and ensure that its policies are effectively carried out.

Finally and on behalf of Aweil people in Canada, the office of F.A.C.C would like to extend heartfelt condolences, to the families and friends of late: Aweil West Commissioner, Simon Wol Mawien, Dhel Achor Dhel, and Udimo Dut Ayaga who suddenly left us these past few days. The untimely passing-away of these prominent Aweil citizens is a great loss not only to their immediate families but to the entire Aweil community. Their love and services to the community will greatly be missed, may God rest their souls in eternal peace. Thank you.
